Protect Your Most Precious Valuables

by Christine Powell on 02/22/13

The time to discover you don’t have enough insurance for your jewelry, artwork and other unique valuables isn’t after a loss.

Talk to your agent about what coverage is provided for valuables under your policy. Particularly whether there are special lower limits, when those special limits may apply, and whether certain types of losses are covered. You might want to consider adjusting your policy in one of the following three ways.

1: Increase Special Limits:

Your homeowners policy automatically covers household contents such as furniture, clothes and many appliances up to a limit of insurance for such personal property. However, policies usually have special limits for theft of valuable items such as jewelry. You can select more coverage by increasing these limits.

2: Add “unscheduled” items:

Unscheduled items generally include valuable jewelry, art or silverware and aren’t itemized in a basic homeowners policy. Talk to your agent today about the different deductibles and amounts of coverage available for your unscheduled items.

3: Add a “scheduled floater”:

A scheduled floater (also called a scheduled personal article endorsement) usually insures your valuable items against more causes of loss than under your base policy. For example, a scheduled floater usually covers a lost diamond from a ring or a misplaced earring. With a scheduled floater, you supply your agent a list of scheduled property and professional appraisal documentation when required. Those items are then covered with their own specified limits and fewer exclusions separate from your base policy, usually giving you broader coverage. A scheduled floater also allows you to choose the deductible that’s right for you.

How does a scheduled floater work?

Your homeowners policy covers jewelry- but typically only up to $1,000 for a single item. With a scheduled floater, you get extra coverage for your most precious items. For example, your house is broken into and a $6,000 engagement ring is stolen. Without a floater, $5,000 of that won’t be covered. With a floater added to the policy that specifies all jewelry, you’re covered for the loss.

Farmers offers coverage for:

  • Jewelry (Rings, necklaces, earrings, watches, etc.)
  • Fine art (paintings, statues, tapestries, etc.)
  • Silverware
  • Firearms
  • Cameras
  • Musical insturments

And remember, it’s always a good idea to keep sales receipts, written descriptions, photos or recordings of your valuable items in the event of a claim.

Large Losses do Occur! Consider a Commercial Umbrella.

by Christine Powell on 01/30/13

Here are some examples:

Homeowner’s association: $6,194,000

A guest at a condominium complex fell from a pier, rendering her a paraplegic. Due to a recent drought, water had receded beyond the pier exposing the shoreline. The claimant alleges that there should have been a railing to prevent falling.

Apartment building: $1,900,000

A fire occurred in the insured’s apartment building. Eight days before the fire, a property management code was approved requiring smoke detectors regardless of building size. The tenant was seriously burned and the fire department concluded the fire was the result of the plaintiff smoking in bed.

Retail: $11,010,000

A contractor working on the roof of the insured’s retail operation fell through a skylight causing traumatic brain injury resulting in severely diminished mental capacity.

Apartment building: $3,350,000

A child was killed when an electric gate in the apartment building crushed him.

Garage: $2,510,000

The insured’s garage operation repaired a tire on the plaintiff’s vehicle. Approximately two hours later, the tire blew out causing the driver to lose control of the vehicle. The accident injured 10 passengers.

Retail: $6,578,000

A 7-year-old claimant became entangled in a hammock sold by the insured’s retail operation causing brain damage due to hypoxia.

The hammock’s manufacturer is located in another country and not subject to lawful service.

Wholesaler: $5,285,000

The insured’s vehicle was involved in an intersection accident. The driver drove into the path of the claimant’s vehicle.

Bankruptcy court records are filled with examples of companies that thought they weren’t at risk. They believed they didn’t have enough assets to worry about an uninsured or underinsured loss.

Asset Protection

You work hard to earn every dollar. And it’s your decision how best to spend it.

If an unexpected loss does occur, that decision may no longer be yours to make.

You need to assess carefully, with all the facts at your fingertips, whether you can afford not to make an Umbrella part of your insurance plan.

When most businesses examine the facts, they find that a Commercial Umbrella offers them a low-cost way to assure their assets remain theirs- even in the face of a multi-million-dollar lawsuit.

The truth is that it’s not just your current assets at risk, but your potential future earnings as well. Look down the road and picture where your business will be fire or ten years from now. A large loss could easily destroy and hopes of a bright future.

December Agents of the Month

by Christine Powell on 01/10/13

Please join us in congratulating our December Agents of the Month:

For District 13 we have 2 agents that are worthy of winning the award, so for only the second time we’ll be recognizing co-winners. First off Mike Schmisek finished with 66 total P&C policies, including 25 commercial policies, and 10 Issued and Paid Life policies. Fantastic month Mike to say the least! Joining Mike is agent Mark Schafer . Mark’s December production included 45 P&C policies, 4 Issued and Paid Life policies, and a whopping $15,000 in new business commissions alone. Mark’s dedication to FFS products and his commitment to helping his clients accumulate and protect net worth yielded a huge pay day in the form of an AXA Variable Annuity. Great work Mark!

The inaugural AOTM for District 14 is Nate Bingel. Nate’s December included 33 P&C policies, 8 Issued and Paid life policies, and over $4000 in NB premium. Nice way to finish the year Nate!

We will not be awarding Go-Getter awards for December for either district unfortunately. Looking to see the young guns bounce back in January though… v

Our Adopt-a-Family Success!

by Christine Powell on 12/20/12

Our team was incredibly generous in our Adopt-a-Family this year. We raised enough money from our agents to buy 7 really nice winter coats, hats, gloves, baby clothes and toys for a family in need this winter.

Just look at how much we raised!

We wish we could be there to see their faces when they open their presents!

Special thanks to Don Ticknor, James Lundin, Mark Schafer, Ron Sandilands, Lori Fielding, Matt Mullins, Charlie Sauza, Mike Greve, Raphael Chaman, Linda Martin, Darrell Harsh, Chara Kautz, Jeff and Judy Schacher, and Edward Layton.

You guys rock! Happy Holidays!!!!

Congrats to our November winners!

by Christine Powell on 12/03/12

Join us in congratulating our two winners for the month of November.

Agent of the Month is awarded to a first time winner, James Lundin. James has had an outstanding year in a tough market, and November was no exception. Through the 12 folios James has averaged $2740 in new business commissions per month, and in November he was well over the mark. It was also James’ best life month of the year so far. Outstanding work James!

The Go-Getter award goes to another first timer, Mark Kinnear. Mark had a nice November coming in with $2437 in new business commissions AND $1500 in life premium. Mark is currently #3 in the District in commercial new business with close to $50K in premium for the year….all this in a rural market where relationships trump internet leads and social networking (in other words, Mark is getting it done with good old fashioned face to face networking).

Great work gentlemen…thank you for the hard work and leadership!

Rewards!

Not only is each agent rewarded on his or her own work financially, District Manager Tim Brown gives special incentives to keep up the good work!

We have a monthly luncheon for agents excelling in Life Insurance sales. This is a great way for the whole team to get together and share best practices, marketing ideas, and what’s new with their agencies.

We have “Agent of the Month” and “Go getter of the Month” awards to recognize both veteran and novice agents. Tim takes the agent and their staff to a restaurant of their choice, rewards a generous gift-card to a place of the agents’ choice and finally gives a nice plaque to show his appreciation for their hard work.

These are just some of the special incentives that District 13 offers. Tim also hosts over- night stays in the mountains, limo rides to Blackhawk, and great giveaways including iPads, concert tickets and team jerseys. At District 13 we strive to make it a fun, competitive atmosphere where achievement is recognized and best practices are shared with peers.

Protect Yourself from Burglars!

by Christine Powell on 10/04/12

Every 10 seconds, an American home is burglarized- that’s over three million homes year!

We at District 13 are well acquainted with the burdens this kind of loss can place on you and your loved ones. We’ve serviced claims and seen the hardship, firsthand. A burglary can be emotionally, as well as financially, debilitating.

Here are some helpful hints and methods you can use to protect your home and possessions from burglars. These few, simple precautions can prevent many residential burglaries. And preventing burglaries can potentially help us lower your insurance premiums.

Misconceptions about burglars

You might think that only wealthy people have to worry about burglars. But, if you have a television, radio or camera- you qualify as “wealthy” to most residential burglars. Burglars will take anything of yours that they can use personally or sell to someone else.

You might also think that burglaries occur only late at night when people are asleep. The fact is, most burglars prefer privacy to darkness. This risk of getting caught is too great when there are people at home. As a result, most burglaries occur during the day, while the residents are away at work.

Finally, most burglars are not high tech types with lock-picking tools in their shoes and plastic explosives in their belts. They tend to have no out-of-the-ordinary breaking-and-entering skills. They are usually young people in their teens or early 20s. They look for empty homes with easily accessible windows or unlocked doors.

Burglar-proofing your home

The most important tool a burglar uses is common sense. Creating a solid defense also involved common sense on your part.

Take 10 minutes to walk around your house. Pretend you’re a burglar- case your own home. What do you see? Most burglars aren’t geniuses, but if you leave an easy entry into your home, they will find it.

Here are some of our tips for keeping your home secure:

-Keep shrubbery trimmed. Thick, tall shrubbery provides cover for a burglar to work undetected.

- If you have a dog or an alarm system (or even if you don’t), put up signs that say you do. They deter burglars.

-Never leave a house key in such obvious places as a mailbox or under a doormat.

-Make sure the exterior of your house is well-lit. Exterior lights are important- especially near doors or in the rear of the house, where burglars do most of their work.

-Close and lock your windows. Most burglars won’t attempt to break a secured window for fear of attracting attention.

-Keep your garage door closed and locked. This helps prevent access to the house and protects property in the garage.

-Secure any sliding doors. A steel rod in the door channel is helpful. For additional security, install two or three screws in the overhead track to reduce the chance of the door being lifted out of the track.

-Look into an alarm system. They vary in sophistication from a simple door alarm to a silent alarm linked to a law enforcement agency.

-Have a wide-angle peephole installed, so that you know who is at the door before you open it.

-Be wary of “wrong” numbers and teach children what to say to strangers on the phone.

-Be careful with your keys. Put your house and car keys on separate key rings, and don’t put identification tags on keys.

-Use an engraving pen to write your current driver’s license number on your property. Burglars don’t want marked merchandise because it is difficult to sell and it is evidence of guilt if they are caught.

-Make an itemized list of everything you own. Include brand dame, model number, serial number, where and when purchased, and the items’ purchase price or estimated value. Take photos and video of everything.

-Organize a “Neighborhood Watch” program on your block. By acting as extra eyes and ears for the police, you and your neighbors can help them catch burglars or, better yet, prevent burglaries from happening in the first place.

Protection on vacation

-Use automatic timers to turn lights on and off. An especially effective method is to have times turn on and off at different times to give the impression of movement within the house.

-Ask a neighbor to pick up mail, newspapers, deliveries and flyers daily so there is no buildup. Ask the same neighbor to park in your driveway while you are gone.

-Leave a radio playing- preferably tuned to a talk show with the volume low.

-Remove anything of extreme value from your house before you leave.

What to do if you are burglarized

-DO NOT ENTER your house if you arrive home and discover a burglary has taken place. Call the police immediately. The burglar may still be in your home and you don’t want to confront a potentially armed criminal.

-If you are at home when the burglar strikes, pretend to be asleep. Your safety is the most important.

-If you find yourself face-to-face with the burglar, try to stay calm. The burglar is as startled as you are. Police recommend you say calmly, “Tell me what you want and I’ll give it to you.” Most burglars will just run out.

Remember, whenever you have a claim, Farmers is here to help. Call HelpPoint at 800HELPPOINT and speak to your agent.

Ask your agent for more information on how you can support your local “Neighborhood Watch” program.

Should I become a Farmers Agent? Is being a Famers agent a good idea? Farmers insurance sucks. is farmers insurance a good place to work?

FAQ: So you want to be a Farmers Agent?

by Christine Powell on 09/25/12

How do I get started?

Everything starts with a one-on-one interview with District Manager Timothy Brown at the District Office located in Westminster. Tim believes in meeting candidates face-to-face, and it’s important for you to meet Tim and his staff and tour the District facilities.

The next steps include passing a background check, a Q&A session, a private meeting with one of our agents, and a follow-up meeting with Tim that will include your spouse or significant other.

What are the criteria for successfully passing the background check?

No bankruptcies or unresolved major credit issues, including collections, within the last 3 years. No felonies or major misdemeanors. If you’re still not sure, give us a call and we can discuss your individual case and answer any detailed questions you might have.

Is the insurance licensing difficult?

No. Not easy but definitely not difficult. The vast majority of our new agents pass all of their exams on their first attempt. The exams include two 100 question tests with multiple choice formats. A 70% score or better is required to pass.

How long will it take to pass my insurance exams?

Typically 4 weeks if you’re studying full time, 6 weeks if your current job or career only allows for evenings and weekends for study and prep. To learn more about different licensing prep programs available, visit one of our recommended vendors www.TesTraining.com.

How does the training program work? How long is it?

We have a very comprehensive training program that utilizes three training formats: Live classroom training, one-on-one field training, and the University of Farmers online modules. We believe in utilizing multiple training formats in order to capitalize on proven adult learning methods. We very much embrace a “learn by doing” philosophy, so our training is hands on and active. The training program typically runs for 8 weeks but this varies by candidate. We understand that many of our new agents are making a gradual transition from their current job/career and therefore need flexibility in their training schedule.

What level of sales and marketing support can I expect from Farmers and the District Office?

Our training program includes extensive review of sales and marketing best practices. We’ll teach you the programs that our top agents utilize for new business, and show you how to execute them. The District Office team is also there to support your efforts. Our Sales Manager, Todd Lowry, will work with you one-on-one in developing a business/marketing plan, and spend time with you in the field (including joint sales calls and appointments). Farmers will also provide you with free leads through their in-house online resource insurance shoppers know as 21st Century Insurance. These hot leads, combined with the training and support you get from the District Office team, will keep you very busy and motivated! If you work hard and do the things we know that lead to consistent sales results, you will be successful. Oh, and one more thing; We actually encourage you to avoid pressuring family and friends. If you can’t sell insurance to people you don’t know, you’ll never make it long-term.

Where will my office be?

Your first office will be at the District Office. While all Farmers Agents eventually lease or purchase their own office at a location of their choosing, we discourage our new agents from taking on too much overhead too soon. We want you to focus on sales and building your client base in the early stages. Expect to office at the District for the first 6-12 months of your agent career.

Are there “sales territories” or am I restricted to selling insurance in only certain areas, cities, or counties?

NO. Once you have successfully passed your insurance exams and applied for your insurance license, you are a licensed producer in the state of Colorado and appointed by Farmers Insurance, and can therefore sell anywhere in the state.

Why Farmers?

Farmers is the 3rd largest Auto-Home Insurer in the U.S. and growing. By 2020 we’ll be in nearly every state and our goal is to move in to the #2 spot nationally. In Colorado we are the 2nd largest Auto-Home carrier. We also lead the industry in discounts and in the number of products we sell. Farmers offers coverage for auto, home, life, and all types of recreational vehicles. It’s a one stop-shop opportunity for your clients, which is what consumers want and demand. Tim’s District of Agents leads all of Colorado as the fastest growing district in the state. For more information about Farmers Insurance, visit the Farmers web site www.Farmers.com

I love your commercials! Is the University of Farmers and Professor Burke real?

Unfortunately the Professor is a fictional character played by the great actor J.K. Simmons, but the University of Farmers is a real place, and as a graduate of our training program you will spend one week there for advanced training from our real Professors. In 2011 The University of Farmers was voted the #1 corporate training program among all U.S. companies. Check out this article: http://www.trainingmag.com/article/training-top-125-no-1-farmers-premier-position

We Are Farmers (bump-te-de-bump bump, bump bump bump!)

What is a realistic compensation for a new agent?

Upon completing the training program, Farmers will appoint you to the Career Agent Program. Career Agents are compensated with a base subsidy that begins at $2,500/month in addition to *new business commissions and policy renewals. Though it varies from agent to agent what a first year total will be, we can tell you the average agent in District 13 grosses over $13K/month, with the top agents earning over $30K/month. You will also have the opportunity to meet and talk to agents with less than 5 years tenure that already make over $125K/annually. Understand that we never make promises or guarantee projections…this requires a lot of work and sacrifice, especially in the early stages of your career.

*What is realistic for new business sales for a new agent?

We expect our new Career Agents to sell a minimum of 30 policies per month (or 1 policy per day). 30 policies will typically generate new business commissions in the $1500-$2500 range. Add this to your $2500 base, plus policy renewals, and you can get a feel for the potential in your first year.

It seems like there are a lot of Insurance agents in town…is the market saturated?

No argument from us, there are a lot of insurance agents in Colorado (and real estate agents, and mortgage brokers, etc.). Here’s the good news, the majority fall in to 2 categories: 1) Established agents who have been around for several years and are not very active in the market place and 2) passive agents that sit around their office and wait for the phone to ring. Our training program stresses active, face-to-face marketing that will get you in front of prospects. In District 13 the average agent sells over 40 policies per month, which tells us there is plenty of business to be won in the market place for those who are willing to work for it! It’s also important to remember that Colorado has a growing, active, and thriving population, which means an ever-increasing demand for quality insurance products.

How do I find new business?

That is THE question, is it not? In District 13 we stress active marketing programs which get you face-to-face with prospects. How does Farmers Insurance handle claims?

When a catastrophe strikes in Colorado, as we tragically witnessed in 2012 with the devastating fires in Fort Collins and Colorado Springs, Farmers Insurance steps up in a big way  http://finance.yahoo.com/news/farmers-insurance-claims-teams-helping-135300730.html . We’re also there after the fact to pay our claims and make sure we help get our clients back where they belong http://www.denverpost.com/business/ci_18818281.v

Reasons we are Proud to be District 13!

by Christine Powell on 09/20/12

District 13 is the fastest growing Farmers District in Colorado, a position we’ve held since 2009. We are located in Westminster and have successful agents all over the Front Range. Here are a few reasons we are proud to be District 13…

Diversity and Teamwork

We have people from every walk of life in District 13. No matter who you are, you can feel at home in our district. We have successful agents from all different backgrounds, ethnicity, ages and experiences! The best part is, all of our agents are more than willing to help each other out. The more successful Farmers agents we have, the better off everyone is.  At District 13, we really are a team.

Training

In addition to diversity, we have one of the most successful and thorough training programs in the state. New agents are given one-on-one training from the most knowledgeable staff around. We make sure that you have the tools you need to get out there are start your career! Top agents in the district also act as coaches and mentors to the new agents that join our team.

We Care!

District 13 works hard each year to support March for Babies. For 3 years and counting we’ve hosted an annual District 13 Texas Hold-em poker tournament to raise money for helping babies and mothers through the March of Dimes organization. We’re proud and thankful to have raised over $4000 at this year’s tournament.

In addition to this, District 13 volunteers their time monthly at local food shelters. We know that hard work is important, but giving back is imperative. We are thankful for our success and do our best to give back to the community that supports us.

Give us a call today and find out why District 13 is the Best Farmers Insurance District to Work for in Colorado!
